Detailed project description
The rapid growth of Lebanon’s major cities—Beirut, Tripoli, Zahlé, and Saida—and their suburbs necessitates investment plans for future transportation systems to alleviate traffic congestion and support future economic growth.
Fieldwork aims to update and enhance the existing database by gathering previously missing data. This includes measuring traffic volumes, journey characteristics, speed, and vehicle classifications within the cities and on national roads. Additionally, the work involves assessing road characteristics to determine the road network’s level of service. The study aimed to provide:
- A detailed assessment of trip patterns and travel choices.
- An evaluation of the transport system’s supply characteristics.
- An analysis of the modal split in transportation, particularly within urban areas.
The final output was to provide accurate data for improving the travel demand model development, forecasting, and planning for transportation needs and services progress by implementing transportation policies that enhance public transport’s share and facilities.
Services provided
- Road inspections to validate the existing road network’s characteristics.
- Stated Preference (SP) survey (preference choice of a transport mode).
- Manual and automatic counts for measuring traffic volumes, speed and vehicle classification.
- O/D surveys to update the O/D matrices by collecting valuable data related to individuals and trips.
- Designing an urban transport model for the major urban areas (Beirut, Tripoli, Saida, Zahlé).
- Current situation calibration.
- Evaluation of future scenarios, and comparison between options for the urban transport strategy.
